Simple, practical water skills that enable people to remain calm and capable in deep water.
Most people are comfortable near deep water, such as on pool decks, boats, docks and beaches.
In Houston, we live surrounded by water—bayous, pools, lakes, the Gulf Coast, and seasonal flooding.
In fact, we are often one decision away from being in deep water.
Sometimes, it isn’t even our decision.
Ask Yourself:
Can you float calmly on your back for three minutes?
Can you tread water for five minutes without holding onto the wall?
Can you remain calm if water goes up your nose or splashes in your face?
Can you relax and breathe comfortably when you cannot touch the bottom?
Can you swim to the bottom and touch it with your hands or feet?
If the answer to any of these questions is no, you’re not alone.
These are foundational water skills many adults were never taught.
For the first time in decades, drowning deaths in the United States are rising across all age groups.
At the same time, access to swim lessons and structured water training has declined.
The result is a growing gap in water competence across the country.
When people feel comfortable near water, but lack the skills to manage themselves in it, the risk of panic and drowning increases.
The CalmWater Collective exists to bridge that gap.
Our training focuses on practical water skills, such as treading, floating, breath control, and developing confidence in deep water.
